Title: A question about this kundalini technique
Post by: george8449 on December 22, 2015, 08:21:41 AM
Hello all.

In yoga there's a technique called Mula Bandha and it's said to help awaken kundalini. Some sources say to correctly perform the technique you contract the anus muscles, but others say you isolate the perineal body only and contract those muscles without any movement in anus or genitals, which I am finding slightly challenging.

My question is does anyone know what is the correct version? I hope to awaken my kundalini with this technique, but I have not been able to isolate the perineal body only yet. It's quite advanced. Is it necessary to contract only the perineal muscles, or is the contraction of the anus sufficient? One book I have says you perform Mula Bandha at the end of the inhale to draw apana upwards, and I was wondering if just the contraction of the anus muscles alone will draw apana upwards.

Any comments or suggestions will be highly appreciated.

With practice you will learn to isolate the different muscles. It is just the perineum muscles that you will want to focus on, but everyone starts by contracting the entire region. Actually, the contractions are not as important as learning to relax everything after contracting it. It is possible to finish having added residual tension. And contracting the muscles around the anus has a tendency to pull in air. Don't worry about it.

Hello  ## George !

I feel that contracting the anus as one forces the prana upward with the breath, muscles, visualisation and will is effective but needs to be combined with the lifting of the pelvic floor and the moving of the abdominal wall backwards and upwards. This impetus creates a bolus of energy and shifts it from the pelvic floor to the third eye.

I was instructed with the Mulu Bandha as part of a combination of Yoga Locks called the Maha Bandha;
  • Jalandhara Bandha
    Uddiyana Bandha
  • Uddiyana Bandha
  • Mula Bandha

I perform a Lock and Breathing exercise which uses Yogic locks in a similar style to lift energy through the spinal column; Tree of Life.

Enter Sacred Chamber /Pathworking Space in Dim Light in Loose Clothing
Open in Prayer
Sit in Throne Asana : with spine supported bare feet upon the floor in a comfortable armchair arms supported palms upward.
Close the Physical Eyes

Deep Breathe 3 times to flush the body of stale prana :
Draw energy down the crown spiraling through each stone; head , chest, belly and down the legs and out the toes.
Widdershins is counter clockwise and opens. Deosil is counter clockwise and closes. I find that the energy just flows like a paint brush swathing and coating the inner walls of each energy chamber.

Now Draw energy upwards.
First Deep Breathe and draw energy up the legs like water through a straw
Each joint helps to retain the flow like locks on a canal moving the river water upward ; ankles shins knees and hips relax release and let go
on the next deep breath draw the energy up these now primed legs

Modified Mulu Bandha
Contract the anus and pull up the pelvic floor and slam the abdominal muscles backward and upward holding the breath from this point
This forms a primed bolus of energy which cleanses the internal organs with fresh engorged prana and rushes upward to the heart

Now push the bolus to the wing spot in the scapula; one might feel the energy body wings unfold
and from there our bolus of energy  is flung upward and forward through the throat to the crown to the third eye.
Now we relax, release and let go
This is called Sitting in the Dragon of Kundalini.
It is an alchemical function married with Yoga .
I learnt this modified version of the Maha Bandha with peers while in  trance meditation in circle

Sitting in The Dragon causes energy to be moved from the perineal energy structure called the Throne of God up the spine to the Heart and pump of the energy body.
From the heart a golden flow of energy is ignited like a torch or a river of lava which flows up a mountain .
This energy is a Treasure of the Middle Tan Tien or Dan Tien called by the Taoists; Shen.
The fire moves up to the cap energy structure called the Crown of the Goddess ,
Here it ignites the wick of the candle in the Third Eye providing clairvoyance.

The brilliant golden flow of precious Shen energy is pulled by muscles, will , visualisation and breath from the heart to the brow centre.
This flushes the body with fresh pranic intake and envigorates the soul. It releases the locks upon the various aspects of the energy body and facilitates projection from the body.
This causes mindfulness and then one pointed-ness and produces a meditative trance .

It causes the vitals to become reduced and the mystic enters deeper states of trance. The eye of the soul awakens and the prerequisite Shen that golden energy needed to see clairvoyantly has been  carried from the heart to the third eye where ignites the energy centres with this golden fire. And for a time , the magickian is able to see, to hear, to call, to fly and to pathwork in blissful meditative trance.

Aging is proportional to respiratory rate (excluding exceptions), e.g.,

Rabbit: Respiratory rate = 30–60/min and Life span = 5.0–6.0 years [2]
Monkey: Respiratory rate = 30–50/min and Life span = 20–30 years [3]
Human: Respiratory rate = 12–16/min and Life span = 70–80 years
Whales: Respiratory rate = 3–5/min [4] and Life span = more than 100 years
Though the level of consciousness varies from species to species, it is seen highest in humans where conscious mind can provoke to perform activities and exercises as per wishes and this voluntary performance is not up to such an extent in any other species and consequently all other species cannot cease their breath as and when desired (voluntarily). Some species (e.g., whales) can take enormous air and cease it for a long time but that is spontaneous requirement and involuntary; and it is the necessity for them to survive this way.

The practice of Maha Bandha must be taken up only after one masters the three locks – Moola Bandha (Root Lock), Uddiyana Bandha (The Abdominal Lock) and Jalandhara Bandha (The Chin Lock) separately. First practice all the three bandhas separately, then integrate all of them together to do Maha Bandha.

Maha Bandha should not be practiced by those suffering from blood pressure problems, heart diseases, ulcer of stomach or intestine, stroke, paralysis and hernia. Also pregnant women should avoid this practice. Maha Bandha should be practiced under the guidance of an experienced yoga instructor after you have mastered the three basic locks.

How to do Maha Bandha (The Great Lock)?

Sit in a comfortable meditative posture preferably Padmasana or Siddhasana. If you have difficulty sitting in these asanas, then sit in any easy cross-legged pose like half Lotus Pose (Ardha Padmasana), Sukhasana or Swastikasana. Keep the spine erect. Breathe normally and relax the whole body.
Keep the palms on the knees and close your eyes.
Take a deep breath and then exhale fully. Simultaneously perform Jalandhara bandha (The chin lock), then Uddiyana Bandha (The abdominal lock) and then the Moola Bandha (The root lock) in that order. Retain the breath outside.
Retaining the breath outside is called Bahir Kumbhaka. Retain the breath outside for as long as you are comfortable. During retention, awareness can be maintained on any of the three chakras – Mooladhara chakra, Manipuraka chakra and the Vishuddhi chakra. You may also rotate the consciousness between these three chakras.
To release the Maha Bandha, first release Moola Bandha (root lock), then the Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock) and then finally the Jalandhara Bandha (chin lock) in that order.
This is one round of Maha Bandha. Repeat the process for as many times as you feel comfortable. Take ample rest after each round by doing relaxed breathing till you are ready for the next round.
Benefits of Maha Bandha (The Great Lock)

Maha Bandha gives the combined benefits of all the three basic bandhas – Moola bandha, Uddiyana bandha and Jalandhara bandha.
It also activates the three chakras – Mooladhara Chakra, Manipuraka Chakra and Vishuddhi Chakra.
It activates the pineal glands and therefore regulates the entire endocrinal glands.
It rejuvenates the cells in the entire body and hence helps as an anti-aging mechanism.
During initial stages there is discomfort to retain the breath. But with practice, breath can be retained for long durations. When the lock is released, there is a general sense of well-being and bliss. The mind calms down and there is experience of a peaceful state. It removes the afflictions of the mind like anger and lust.
Maha Bandha is practiced by yogis to attain a peaceful and introverted state of mind before starting the practice of meditation.
The practice of Maha bandha, pulls the pranic energy upwards. The apana vayu is pulled up and merges with the prana vayu in the abdominal region, which is the seat of samana vayu. This awakens the Prana Shakti which brings about heightened levels of awareness. With practice it will help in the awakening of the Kundalini Shakti resting at the base of the spine as well.
Both the Gheranda Samhita and Hatha Yoga Pradeepika describes Maha Bandha as the conqueror of old age and death. Also, all the desires of the yogi is fulfilled by practicing this Bandha.
Maha Bandha is an advanced practice and should be learnt under the guidance of an expert. There should not be any strain while holding the breath outside. If there is any discomfort, release the lock and breathe normally.

Advance practitioners can hold the breath outside for a prolonged period of time. Initially start with few seconds only. Increase it gradually till you reach one minute of external retention. To increase the period of retention, awareness can be practiced on any of the three chakras – Mooladhara, Manipuraka or Vishuddhi. Maintain awareness on any one the chakra. Chant ‘Om’ mentally while maintaining the awareness. You can count the number of ‘Om’s chanted. By gradually increasing the count you can increase the duration of retention. Another method is rotation of consciousness on the three chakras. First, take you awareness to Mooladhara Chakra and chant ‘Om’ mentally. Then move on to Manipuraka Chakra and chant ‘Om’ mentally. Finally take you awareness to Vishuddhi Chakra and chant ‘Om’ mentally. This is one rotation of consciousness. Repeat this process for as many number of times, as long as you can retain the breath outside comfortably. Using this technique, one can gradually increase the breath retention. Advanced yogi can retain the breath outside for even two to three minutes. During this process, one needs the guidance of an experienced Guru to prevent any harm due to improper practice.

Maha Bandha is a good practice to prepare you for higher practices of meditation and Samadhi.

Thank you for the reply. There does seem to be a residual sensation left there after attempting the mula bandha. I've noticed that if I contract the urethra quickly but gently over a dozen times, and then relax, I feel a slight pulling/squeezing sensation at the perineum, as if it is trying to contract on its own but isn't quite developed enough yet.

Hello Aunt Clair. Thank you for the reply, it was extremely helpful. I have one question regarding the maha bandha.  Is there any way this can be performed lying down? I noticed the half lotus position was mentioned on the YogIC Way Of Life website, but I am unable to maintain even this position because of a serious knee injury I suffered many years ago. I've been working on chakra development everyday consistently for 2 years, but I always did it lying down. I hope to awaken kundalini, but now I'm wondering if my inability to sit in an asana position will prevent this from happening.

Good Question the textbook answer would be no
but the truth is that where there is a will there is a way
and all energy can be moved while lying down.
But that is much more difficult than when the feet or the perineum are in contact with Mother Earth. My favoured asana is the Throne pose sitting comfortably like the lady in the chair n the banner currently being attended by angels but with the palms upward.

LONG ANSWER
Energy enters more readily through the front of the chest, the perineum, the soles of the feet and the top /scalp of the head. These are the primary influent energy centres
the one in the perineum has been called the Throne of God.

Imho and ime when seen clairvoyantly, The Throne of God energy centre is a flat structure that begins round at the perineum and becomes square in shape curiously when it encompasses the outer his. Within it are tiny jewel like coloured worms of subtle jewel toned light pathways . These are called nadis or rivers. There is a funicular pathway or trif fold cord of three primary nadis that travel from the perineum to the crown or scalp along and through and around the spine like twisting rivers of energy. These are primary nadis are present in all humans and the reciprocal energy that rushes into the body and typically up the spine when these rivers are engorged is called Kundalini. The rivers do not maintain their prime. But during altered states of consciousness and energy work the rivers can become primed and maintain that for a time and this is optimal to facilitate kundalini events.

A.
The rivers flow upward initially from the perineum to the crown. First Kundalini Events will rise like a serpent of fire up the spine. The energy centre in the crown has been called the Crown of the Goddess. The crown becomes coloured silver in the Opus Minor or Little Work. This silver is the noble akasha which begins as purple in a basal state being the marriage of blue female water and red male earth. The Lunar Work is completed by the first Guardian Angel a cobalt blue Hermetic Eagle Winged aspect of self projecting from the body through the Third Eye.

The crown becomes golden aka the Golden Bowl which is cracked in death as in the Biblical Emerald Tablet; Ecclesiastes attributed to Solomon. The golden energy is Shen the treasure of the head or moonstone. It is the candle flame the light by which all clairvoyance is viewed. It is cultivated in the heart as fire and is moved by the mystic with will, muscles, breath and visualisation up the scapula up the throat and through the brain and forward to the third eye .Shen is a name for this golden light the reciprocal treasure of the cobalt to indigo blue moon of the head. The solar angel projects from the chest as the Higher Self with a Hermetic Lion's mane.

The union of the Lion and the Eagle forms the Angel the emerald green ascendant of the EarthStone or belly which initially erupts from a lesser chartreuse green supernal energy in the Heaven Stone above the head but becomes a noble emerald green over time and this cures the ruby red Bull Guardian Demon
So the eagle, then the lion, then the angel transmutes the bull and from this is formed higher consciousness angels first hermaphroditic black and white, then silver then gold and the path continues

B.
Eventually with sufficient energy work, the magickian is capable of moving energy up and down the spine.
Drawing in the alpha os of the crown and moving it down the toes and then reversing the flow drawing energy into the soles of the feet and up the spine through the perineum to the third yed.

Then the magickian may try to move the energy within the system of the spine to take it in at the third eye, crown, heart , perineum or soles of feet and move it in oned direction up or down the spine and then reversing the flow . The magickian holds the breath and does not release the energy but moves it at will with visualisation and intent up and down the spine until they need to exhale. Then they relax, release and let go and repeat the process with the next breath.

C.
After such works , the magickian will find Kundalini Events will sometimes cause hot fire to rise up the spine and cold water to fall like sheets down the back.

The purposes of moving energy include but are not limited to ; healing, entering trance, provoking Kundalini, furthering ascension, seeking continued enlightenment et cetera.

Thank you Aunt Clair. I've tried doing some different postures and something strange happened last night. I was in a dream and as I was walking I felt a large, heavy snake wrap itself around my body. I grabbed its head so it wouldn't bite me and it started to hiss angrily. I started to wake up gradually, but I suddenly felt the anus area cramp and contract wildly without me doing anything.

Then my larynx started to throb too for no reason, and I could feel something trying to crawl into my rectum. Both the larynx and rectum contracted together for what seemed like 5-10 minutes, and it felt like there was a tube along my spine was connecting these two areas. Throughout all of this I was in an out of the hypnagogic state trying to sleep, but the contractions in the anus were relentless and it was the strongest sensation I've ever felt. The hissing sound continued for the whole time too and the image of the snake kept returning. I tried to relax at one stage and everything suddenly intensified and I heard an almighty roar. I got scared and stopped and forced myself to stay awake. Then everything calmed down.

Any comments on this would be so appreciated because I'm confused. I was wondering if it sounded like a psychic attack. There was no pain but i still don't know what was about to happen. i've had astral projections before with loud sounds but never had my perineum/anus contract wildly like that before.

Hello George,  although the proverbial archetype of kundalini is the firey serpent rising up the perineum around the spine and around the heart to the crown, this is only one event. Indeed, many mystics have felt they are wrapped by a serpent or that the serpent swallows them or they become a giant serpent. All of these visions are archetypes of Kundalini. One could measure the intensity by the dreaming and the number of serpents and their sizes compared to the mystic and their placement.

Quote
I started to wake up gradually, but I suddenly felt the anus area cramp and contract wildly without me doing anything.
The perineal area between the anus and the genitalia is the large influent energy centre which has been called the Throne of God. It is the main opening the front door to Kundalini. The entrance of kundalini serpents may cause the genitalia and the anus to throb , gyrate, heat up and in other ways become affected.

Quote
Then my larynx started to throb too for no reason,

Well Kundalini is a reciprocal force of energy rushing into the body not unlike the way lightning is the coming together of two forces from the ground and the sky so the mystic's body has been prepared and a reciprocal force strikes like a serpent. And the opening of Kundalini brings with it psychic awakening and attunements . It evokes spirit helpers and teachers and the higher self of the mystic , too , of course.

The larynx is a secondary centre between the primary blue and green chakras , it will become an engorged aqua chakra. Each chakra has a unique energy and yields unique abilities. The chakra of the throat improves evocation or calling. This is a good thing and natural.

Quote
and I could feel something trying to crawl into my rectum. Both the larynx and rectum contracted together for what seemed like 5-10 minutes, and it felt like there was a tube along my spine was connecting these two areas.
Well other mystics have felt the energy rush up the rectum too you are not alone. Energy centres on the body will react in tandem to each other and may be affected by a Kundalini event at the same time. The throat is a major opening as is the rectum of course. Both are influent and effluent energy centres and both are sexual orifices. Of course Kundalini is sublime and not sexual but the mind reacts to it as it will. And it is not unusual for the physical body to feel excited or stimulated in these areas as Kundalini strikes.

Some women feel raped by the energy or violated and complain of numerous and sundry symptoms. I have no use for such whinging. Kundalini is an extension of us and our connection to Godhead and the universal prana. When it is received unprepared it can cause some problems but most of those who whinge about it suffered previous to its visit and have underlying issues. I feel that Kundalini events should be embraced like a welcome rain to a thirsty farm.
Quote

This sounds like your energy body was clear and ready and that you were blest by this event with visions. Were your dreams profound during this stage?

Quote
The hissing sound continued for the whole time too and the image of the snake kept returning.
The energy is actually audible clairaudiently and others do hear the rising of the serpent. I have certainly heard it hiss and felt it fall and rise and couple too.
Quote

The roar is cool isn't it? I embrace Kundalini events and welcome each one. This is so much better than the sound of thunder on a hot summer evening. It is personal and intense and marvellous!

Title: Re: A question about this kundalini technique
Post by: george8449 on January 29, 2016, 09:57:01 AM
Thank you Aunt Clair, your explanation has helped me greatly. I was worried it was a psychic attack but now I'm relieved it wasn't. I didn't think it was anything kundalini related because it didn't match the usual description of a sensation moving up the spine, and also because I didn't feel any contractions at the perineum. So knowing that there is more than one way a kundalini event can happen answered a lot of questions for me. For a moment I thought it was something to do with astral projection because I was in the borderland state between sleep and awake.

I have definitely wrote everything in my diary like you said. I am starting to see how important that is now. I have to say though that the sensation of something actually alive and clenching the pelvic floor was like nothing I've ever experienced. I'll certainly never forget it.
